Electronic trucking logs might save lives and prevent injuries

Truckers have to keep logs to show how long they drive each shift. These logs include location information, hours on the road and the number of miles driven. Since these logs are done on paper, there is a chance that truckers won't provide accurate information. In fact, some people have voiced concerns about truckers changing logs or having two sets of logs just so that it can seem like they are in compliance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's hours of service rules.

A new rule set by the FMCSA will seek to do away with paper logs in favor of electronic logs. These electronic logs won't be in all trucks and buses since there are certain exemptions that will allow some truckers to continue using paper logs. Still, it is estimated that 3 million truckers and bus drivers will have to make the switch to electronic logs.

The FMCSA estimates that around 562 injuries and 26 fatalities will be prevented each year because of the electronic logs. This is primarily because the device will be able to better keep track of the hours that the truck is being driven, which can help to combat truckers trying to get around the hours of service regulations.

When it comes to semi-truck accident personal injury cases, electronic logs will likely be helpful. These can provide information that can't be changed by the trucker. That information can help to determine if trucker fatigue is a probable cause of the accident. It can be used as the basis of your claims for compensation if you are injured in a big rig accident.
