How common are drunk driving fatalities in Wisconsin?

In the United States, one out of every three traffic deaths has a drunk driver involved in the accident. Law enforcement officers do what they can to try to reduce the rate of drunk driving fatalities; however, these horrible accidents are still fairly commonplace. Taking a look into how Wisconsin's fatal alcohol-related crashes compare to the national numbers proves to be fairly interesting.

How common are drunk driving fatalities in Wisconsin?

When you consider people of all ages, Wisconsin's death rate for alcohol-related crashes is just slightly higher than the nation as a whole. Nationally, 3.3 people die in these types of accidents per 100,000 people in the population. In Wisconsin, that figure is 3.6 people per 100,000.

What age groups are most at risk of fatal drunk driving accidents?

Adults are overwhelmingly the group most at risk, specifically those who are 21 to 34. That particular age group accounts for 6.7 deaths per 100,000 people. Interestingly, that age group is the only one in which Wisconsin's death rate is lower than the national death rate. This state's death rate comes in at 6.5 deaths per 100,000.

How do drunk driving fatalities involving children compare?

Drunk driving fatalities involving people from birth up to age 20 is 1.3 nationally; however, the Wisconsin rate is higher. Wisconsin's death rate for those up to 20 is 1.6 deaths per 100,000 people in the population.

It is also interesting to note that Wisconsin adults seem to know that they drive after drinking too much. In Wisconsin, 3.1 percent of adults reporting drinking too much and then getting behind the wheel. That was much higher than the national result of 1.9 percent.
